AOD's Headed to War with WMD's

When the two teams square up in this month's Memphis Roller Derby championship bout, it'll be all about Death and Destruction.

Trying for just their second win of the season, the PrissKilla Prezleys were beaten handily, 103-23, in the Sept. 8 semifinal by the Angels of Death, who took a step closer to a clean sweep in this inaugural season of MRD.

Meanwhile, in the doubleheader's other bout, the Women of Mass Destruction continued their steady rise by outlasting the Legion of Zoom, 102-62.

So the table is now set for the Sept. 22 final at the Collierville Funquest, featuring the Angels of Death and the Women of Mass Destruction.

"We're ready for it to be over," said AOD coach Jonjitsu, whose team is now 7-0 and one win away from a perfect season.

"On any given day, any one team can beat another. There's a lot to be worried about."

Against the PKPs, the AODs were again dominating, holding the skaters in pink to just 5 and 6 points in the second and third periods, respectively.

"We go out and play 'kill the jammer' and play nickel and dime offense. It's our game plan. It seems to work for us," Jonjitsu said.

As usual, AOD jammer Lil' Cinner was masterful, scoring 52 of the AOD's 103 points and was lead jammer on 8 of 9 jams. Gwen Reaper added 39 points in a strong effort for the Angels.

Meanwhile, PKP jammer Dirty Constance scored 12 of her team's 23 points. The PKPs, whose roster was depleted, started the game strong but faded in the final two periods. The team finished the season at 1-6.

A fracas erupted at the end of the bout, with players from both teams exchanging words and pointing fingers. Referees had to direct the AODs off the rink.

"It ended a little sour," said a frustrated Jonjitsu, adding: "It's bad for the game."

In the evening's first bout, the WMDs put an end to the championship hopes of the Legion of Zoom, who had finished the regular season in second place.

While it seemed there was a Z-Girl or two in the penalty box nearly every jam, the WMDs were on fire from the start.

WMD jammer Akilles Wheel contributed 42 points in the winning effort, leading all jammers in the bout. Her 11 points in the second jam of the first period was also the most scored all night in a single jam.

But the WMDs also got 39 points from Your Mom, who made her first appearance since an injury early in the season.

"Having her back in the postseason was a big plus," said The Unabobber, coach of the WMDs. "My girls played great. And with the addition of (blocker) Carly Manson to the team, we had a great pack."

Your Mom, who got lead jammer status in 7 of her 8 jams, said being back on the rink felt awesome.

"We had great line-ups and our blockers just held it together. We kicked some ass," Your Mom said.

The WMDs improved to 3-4 on the season. With the loss, the Z-Girls finished the season at 3-4, but they didn't hang their heads. The ladies were laughing and dancing between jams and having fun until the final buzzer.

Despite being double-teamed by the WMDs, Rolls Royce led the Zoom with 25 points; fellow jammer Kel Diabla added 21.
