PrissKilla Prezleys win second pre-season bout 161-133

The PrissKilla Prezleys (PKP) have an interesting strategy.

"There is a two-drink minimum and a Camel cigarette between every period," said jammer Hustlin' Flow.

But however unusual the Prezley's strategy may be, the two-drink minimum worked for them as they beat the Legion of Zoom (known as the Z-Girls) 161-133 during Memphis Roller Derby's second pre-season bout.

The bout is divided into two-minute jams. During the jams, both teams have jammers that try to get around their opponent's blockers as they circle the track. It may seem simple, but with all of the speed gained on the derby track curves – and some of the derby girls' curves – and the amount of bodies flying into each other and sometimes into the suicide seating, it is hard for blockers and jammers to always see what is going on around them.

"It is good when you don't knock over your own teammates," said Prezley captain Jill B. Nimble. The Prezleys fabulous defense held the Z-Girls' score down while the Prezley jammers – including Hustlin' Flow, Chica Bandita, Dirty Constance, and newcomer Psycho Pixie – roared through the pack.

With three minutes left in the 2nd period, it was obvious after Psycho Pixie scored the Prezleys 100th point, that the Zoom were destined to be doomed.

But though the Prezleys dominated the entire game by an average lead of 20 points, the Z-Girls kept up in spirit and sportsmanship.

When they were first introduced, the Z-Girls took to the rink in white button-down men's shirts, hats and glasses and stripped them off super-hero style to the roar of the crowd. Alex Pilkinton, otherwise known as Piss Z. Pants, the Z-Girls cheerleader, carried a gigantic Z around the rink and jumped around like a schoolgirl at recess. He said he got involved in MRD because "powerful women make me hot."

Even after two of their team members were ejected in the last period for fouls – and their captain, Smashimi, had to be carried off the track with a broken tibia and fibula – the Z-Girls fought to the end.

Smashimi wasn't the only injury. Prezleys Bloody Elle took a hard fall in the first period but stuck it out throughout the entire match because she was "looking forward to the beer" at the after-party at the Young Avenue Deli. Chica Bandita received an elbow to the face.

Whorecules, the Z-Girls coach who wears a breastplate and gladiator helmet, said that the pre-season exhibition games are great for fine-tuning strategy. She plans to work with her team on what she calls "grabby hands," or fouls, before the regular season begins in March.

Hope to see you there!
