1. Roller Derby? Isn't that like wrestling on skates? Do you beat each other up?
Absolutely not. Roller Derby is a legitimate sport, and like any other sport, there are rules and regulations. Basic game play pits two teams of five skaters each against each other on a flat track. The object of the game is for the players at the back of the pack, called jammers, to make their way past the other team's players once, then make a second lap through the pack, scoring a point for every opposing player they pass. The other skaters, called pivots and blockers, are there to keep the opposing jammer from getting through.

2. Are there any rules?
Yes, didn't you read that last answer?! Unofficially, the rule of thumb is don't be an asshole. For more information, visit the official rules and penalties at WFTDA.

3. Aren't you afraid of getting hurt?
As in any sport, injuries can occur; most commonly, bruises, pulled muscles, sprains, strains, and broken bones. This is why protective gear and proper training are important.

4. Do you wear short skirts and big striped socks? And what if you don't shave your legs?
The beauty of our sport is that we own it, so we define our sexuality and image in this venture. No one is required to wear short skirts or big socks or even to shave. Besides, those big, striped, flavorlicious sweat soakers go a long way toward covering hairy legs.

5. So, what's the deal with the names?
Skater names are as much a part of the game as the skating. Our girls like to have an alter ego when they compete. Besides, it's the closest most of us will get to being superheroes.

6. How do I become a Rollergirl?
If you're interested in joining the MRD, we suggest attending a few of our free skates or skating on your own to adjust yourself to being on four wheels and to make sure roller derby is right for you. Then, if you are still excited about giving it a try, visit our contact page and send your information to Recruitment. Someone will be in touch with you shortly after with more details.

7. You guys rock! I want to be involved but I don't want to skate. How else can I help out?
We can always use help, whether in promoting the league and our bouts, coaching, refereeing, announcing ... This enterprise takes lots of free labor! If you're willing, visit our contact page and send a message to Volunteering.

8. Do you like your ribs wet or dry? And speaking of ribs, where's the best BBQ in Memphis?
We like ours wet with sweat and cracked n' bruised. Of course, the best barbeque is at our afterparty when Elle Tempered roasts The Victator.

9. Has Elvis really "left the building?"
No way, as a huge fan, he may be spotted at our bouts, bloated and beautiful.
