The student became the teacher as the MRD travel team hit the road Sunday, June 10th, to face Huntsville's Dixie Derby Girls. Still high from their victory in New Orleans, the travel team had no trouble wiping the rink with the Dixie Derby Girls (DDG) — who, ironically, taught MRD everything they know about derby. As is custom, the bout was played by the host team's rules. In Huntsville, a lenient penalty system allows skaters to accrue four majors per period. (MRD house rules allow three majors per bout.) Needless to say, the MRD girls jumped at the opportunity to play with no holds barred. "It was basically a free-for-all," Robin-n-Stealin reported. The highlight of the first period was Lyndalicious scaring the crap out of one of the Huntsville jammers. The jammer actually skated out of bounds (towards the exit!) to avoid one of Licious' hardcore blocks. Also of note was Lil Cinner's visit to the penalty box — something that MRD fans don't see very often. MRD's lead stretched to 18 by the end of 2nd period despite being visibly worn out from keeping up with the incredibly fast pack. Mempho Maniac, one of MRD's fastest jammers, hurt her leg and had to be replaced by Gwen Reaper. The third period was by far the most intense. There were several injuries on both sides — most notably Manda Malice dislocating her shoulder. Penalties were also piling up. Lil Cinner made another visit to the box and got visibly pissed while Brooken Bones and The Victator spent their time in the box "canoodling." At one point MRD had so many gals in the penalty box that they broke the bench. Despite the crowded penalty box, by the end of the bout there had not been a single ejection — a first for any MRD team. However, the game didn't end without a little excitement. The DDG like to end their bouts with a staged fight. Unfortunately, they forgot to tell the MRD girls that a slap on the back of the helmet is code for "let's pretend to fight." Things got a little bit out of hand from there and you would have had to see it to believe it. However, by the time everyone arrived at the after party, all was good. Final score: MRD 102, DDG 68. Special thanks to Blown Fuse for taking notes at the bout! |
