MRD Travel Team Trounces The Big Easy Rollergirls

by Nox

The Big Easy Rollergirls were amazing hosts providing the travel team with a welcoming party with a potluck dinner the evening before the bout, a house to stay in, goodie bags containing things like BERG stickers, voodoo dolls, local tasty treats, Mardi Gras beads, shot glasses, etc. They even made arrangements for the team to be able to skate at the venue prior to the bout so that they could test out the new floor. MRD sends a big THANK YOU to the BERG girls and looks forward to returning the hospitality.

When Memphis comes to town, you better be ready.

Memphis Roller Derby's inaugural travel team bout was in New Orleans, May 19th. With the adrenaline pumping, the MRD travel team was in fine form: Psycho Pixie did a fantastic job of staying on her skates, getting knocked down only a couple times when faced with extremely vigorous defense. Chica Bandita put out a nearly flawless performance. Gwen Reaper showed her wide range of abilities by blocking and jamming. At one point Brooken Bones held off three New Orleans blockers AND their jammer for a good 30 seconds.

Envie remained in the game almost to the end, playing clean and hitting hard.

The New Orleans fans booed MRD during the intro, but that only fired up the travel team. In the third jam, Jonjitsu put in a killer lineup including MRD's top scoring jammer, Lil' Cinner, and some of the most vicious blockers in women's flat track. When the whistle blew, Brooken Bones flipped around, skated backwards, and started calling the shots. There were looks of surprise and shock on the faces of the New Orleans fans and players, but the real shock was yet to come when Lil' Cinner flowed past their defense like water. It was jammer versus jammer until they reached the pack and New Orleans' jammer was sent flying into the crowd while Lil' Cinner went on to put MRD in the lead. The MRD fans were loud and proud, and the long faces of the New Orleans fans were sweet payback for their earlier boos.

It was a very close game until the last 20 minutes when MRD finally ended the Big Easy Rollergirls' undefeated home streak. Final score: MRD - 83, BERG - 58.
